NR171SV Community Development: Past, Present and Future

What is community development, where did it come from, and where is it going? For decades, practitioners have revitalized deteriorated neighborhoods and helped their low-income residents. Yet many of us have not had the opportunity to learn and think about the roots of this effort, its accomplishments and the strategic challenges it faces today and in the days ahead.

Taught by a leading historian of the field, this course presents in photographs the exciting history of community development — including accomplishments of the recent past. Class discussions examine large issues, such as keeping your mission vital, sustaining relationships with government and funders and the proper role for community organizing. At each Training Institute, we tour a cutting-edge community development organization and its neighborhood. A panel of innovative and accomplished practitioners analyzes the most pressing problems they face — such as disinvestment, foreclosures and declines in funding — and what we must do tomorrow to meet these challenges. Each class member receives a copy of the instructor's acclaimed book House by House, Block by Block: The Rebirth of America's Urban Neighborhoods. Experienced leaders, specialized professionals and newcomers to the field will all enjoy exploring the past, present and future of community development.

The class includes a site visit tour on the afternoon of the first day. Wear comfortable shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.
