Symposium pinpoints strategies to build wealth for Black households and communities


On May 3, a symposium “It takes a village: Achieving Black wealth and economic prosperity” will highlight solutions to create generational wealth for Black families. The symposium is the second in a year-long series on advancing equity for people of color and is part of the San Francisco NeighborWorks Training Institute (May 1-5), a weeklong event that provides comprehensive professional education and training for housing and community development professionals.

Confirmed speakers at the symposium include:
 
  • Emilio Dorcely, Chief Executive Officer, Urban Edge, on empowerment Black families receive from owning real estate

  • Shekinah Mitchell, Executive Director of the Piedmont Community Land Trust, Piedmont Housing, examines the relationship with wealth and asset building among Black people from predominantly black communities

  • Jeremie Greer, Co-Founder, Co-Executive Director, Liberation in a Generation, on strategies and programs Black communities are using to build wealth

Symposium highlights:
 
9 – 10:15 a.m. Welcome/Overview of what the black wealth gap is and its history, system policies, and why the housing industry and partners need to find solutions
 
10:15 – 11 a.m.  A panel discussion with community partners who have implemented strategies and programs in their communities to build wealth. These partners are doing “the work”.

Attention Media: The symposium will include solutions housing and community development professionals are applying to build wealth for Black households and communities. Interviews with symposium speakers to help get a better understanding of challenges to Black wealth and how people are addressing them can be scheduled in advance, during, or post-event; as well as interviews about the year-long symposium series regarding advancing equity for people of color.
