WHAT:

Right now, the World Health Organization (WHO) calls loneliness an urgent health threat

with health effects as bad as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. And who is most at risk of feeling the negative impacts of social isolation? Historically marginalized groups, a new survey from NeighborWorks America reports.

A couple of top findings:

More than 1 in 3 Black and Hispanic adults reported difficulty resuming social activities following the most socially isolated times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Americans said improved access to food/groceries (39%), health care (35%), and affordable housing (27%) were the most important areas to develop to help those experiencing social isolation.

Resident services staff at NeighborWorks network organizations help residents connect to services such as food, rental assistance and financial asset building that provide critical support.

NeighborWorks America’s experts Marietta Rodriguez and Romi Hall are available to discuss:

Key findings from NeighborWorks’ survey.

Themes in social isolation and community connections.

Solutions NeighborWorks America offers to address social isolation.
