Expert available to discuss how gentrification impedes housing in Chinatowns across the U.S.

What: As Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month begins in May, NeighborWorks America’s expert is available to discuss issues threatening affordable housing for Asian American people. For example, the effects of gentrification like soaring rents and displacement in Chinatowns across the U.S. are hindering Asian American people’s quality of life.  NeighborWorks America works to address racial and economic disparities every day so that people of all backgrounds can get into and keep homes and build wealth. Lisa Hasegawa plays a pivotal role in advancing these efforts in NeighborWorks America’s Western Region and impacts strategies and results for Asian American and Pacific Islander communities across the country. For more than 20 years, she has worked to improve the housing and quality of life for Asian American and Pacific Islander people by advancing economic mobility and racial equity.

NeighborWorks America expert available for comment:

Lisa Hasegawa, regional vice president, Western Region, NeighborWorks America.
Lisa Hasegawa has more than 20 years of community development, housing and public health experience.  As regional vice president for NeighborWorks America, Hasegawa provides leadership for NeighborWorks, bringing affordable housing resources, racial equity strategies and comprehensive community development investments to communities in 14 states and the Pacific Island jurisdictions throughout the Western U.S.
Lisa Hasegawa, NeighborWorks America's regional vice president of the Western Region, says, "NeighborWorks America is committed to helping protect, preserve and produce affordable housing for Asian American and Pacific Islander people. The gentrification and displacement caused by high rents and land costs in Chinatowns, Little Tokyos and other Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander neighborhoods and communities across the U.S. are hampering their ability to thrive."
She can discuss how gentrification can hinder housing for Asian American residents in Chinatowns across the country; how NeighborWorks America helps Asian American and Pacific Islander people get into and stay in homes; and how NeighborWorks America works through network organizations to impact the largest Chinatown in the U.S. (New York City) and the oldest Chinatown in the U.S. (San Francisco.)
