NeighborWorks America awards more than $1.5 million in grants to nonprofits for rebuilding and relief efforts in disaster-stricken communities 

Washington, D.C. – Today NeighborWorks America announced that this week it will award more than $1.5 million in grants to 18 NeighborWorks network organizations in communities directly impacted by Hurricane Fiona and other disasters. Four nonprofits will use the grants to provide urgent supplies and necessities, such as food and generators, to Puerto Rico residents in the wake of Hurricane Fiona. Additionally, 14 organizations will use the grants to help with disaster-related impacts ranging from storm-damaged housing in Alaska to flood- and tornado-ravaged homes in Kentucky.

NeighborWorks America, a national organization that advances housing and community development through grants, programs and training, increases the capacity of its network organizations to build resilient communities. When Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria ravaged communities in 2017, NeighborWorks America swiftly provided grants to nonprofits who serve residents affected by the disasters.

“NeighborWorks America provides vital assistance to help organizations that deliver uninterrupted critical services to people, so no one is without food, stable housing or a basic need,” said NeighborWorks America Senior Vice President of Field Operations Katie Watts. “It’s a long road to rebuilding and recovery. We want to be there for communities in need and ensure they are supported, safe, and feel secure about their homes and basic everyday needs. Everyone deserves that support.”

Examples of rebuilding and relief NeighborWorks America is supporting with these grants include:

• Repairs to properties and developments damaged by flooding in Missouri and in Arizona and assistance with clean-up, direct relief and navigating rebuilding in rural communities in eastern Kentucky and western Alaska following devastating flooding.
• Delivering water and connecting water storage tanks in central and southern California impacted by drought conditions.
• Roof repairs to housing in Fairbanks, Alaska, damaged by severe snowstorms.
• Assistance to families in rural areas of western Kentucky and western Alabama to rebuild and return home following devastating tornadoes.

In addition to grants, NeighborWorks America supports organizational resilience by ensuring nonprofit organizations have the knowledge and resources to assess community needs through training. Courses include: Are You Prepared? Introduction to Disaster Preparedness & Business Continuity Planning , Introduction to Community Organizing for Disaster Preparedness ,  How to Start a Disaster Volunteer Program, and Helping Your Clients Save Money for Disasters.
